Just wondering if anyone grows Helichrysum marginatum and/or Helichrysum aureum without protection in areas with wet winters. Anyone able to share their experience?
general alpine plant comments/questions here!
Lets see if the forum lets me post photos now... gave up after a while on my last visit- got some funny error message and was referred to some 3rd party policing agency which I never heard back from...
Only a few rock gardens are (almost) fully out of the snow, and those were largely shovelled!- others showing some peaks, with a bit of fresh snow yesterday/today, and maybe some more over the next couple of days...
I'll just try one photo to start to see if I'm allowed...
I suppose it is better to start a new thread than to continue the old one!
The winter starts today! Till now we have had a prolonged fall with temperatures between 5 and 10C (41-50F). Today the sun appeared in the sky for the first time in weeks and the temperature subsequently dropped below the freezing point. The forecast tells that we will have this weather for a week or more.
Sepals have morphed into petaloids, which mechanically keep flowers flat. This ugly duckling was the last in the greenhouse. Not sure if this is a variety or a sporadic mutation. Sepals can be seen on the flower on the left.
Flowers also face out - not so clear why.
HH to all.
(Moderator note: I've split this off into a new thread for 2013 holiday greetings. Lori)
Has everyone noticed that every species name in the NARGS seed list has an embedded link to a Google search? Just click on the species name, then on "Images" to see photos of every species, or on "Web" to look up data. What an amazingly useful feature! Not only does this make selecting seed soooooo much quicker and easier, it also makes every seed list into a fabulous reference tool for later
What a great idea! Thanks so much to all made the seed exchange and this great feature possible. I can't even imagine the effort that goes into it all!
Does anyone know of some good white flowered draba species that do not look ratty after flowering?
Mostly just foliage these days...
Onosma nana; Glaucium flavum aurantiacum - wonder if it will survive the winter?; Salvia cryptantha seems very at home; adding some silvery symmetry - Campanula topaliana:
What's looking interesting in your rock garden beds in August? I'm sure late season bloom or interest is important to all rock gardeners.
Here, Linum sp. (not Convolvulus holosericeus; come on, guys, please tell me when I'm screwing up!) continues to bloom nicely:
Spring has sprung here at the bottom of New Zealand.
Scoliopus bigelovii .In previous years I've caught a slight whiff of it's disagreeable scent however this year the smell was almost unbearable as i tried to get in close with the 60mm macro lens.
Iris reticulata Katharine Hodgkin .The colouring seems more vibrant this season .I wonder if this is because the trough was emptied about 3 months ago and new mix added .
Narcissus tazetta ssp patulus needs a warm sunny spot hence i grow it in a pot .This one has a pleasant scent.
