Daphne, Stellera and other Thymelaeaceae

Submitted by Peter George on Mon, 07/04/2011 - 07:26

I have a 2 inch seedling of Stellera chamaejasme, growing well in it's own pot. What shall I do with it? One of the suggestions I've had is to winter it over and then plant it out next spring, and someone else told me to plant it out in the early fall. It's taken two years to get one seedling to germinate, survive and grow, and I hate to think I'd kill it before it had a real chance. It's one of the plants that I've had on my 'want' list for years, so help me out, please.

Geranium

Submitted by Reed on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 21:41

I was just posting some pics of my favorite rock garden Geranium plants. Geranium pratense from 'Midnight Reiter' one that I have selected out to be mildew resistant on the West Coast. So far so good no mildew on these ones, but all my true to type are cut to the ground right now because they where all white from the mildew. The other is Geranium 'Chocolate Candy' growing in a crevice.

Terrestrial Orchids

Submitted by Mark McD on Tue, 05/04/2010 - 21:29

I'm starting this thread for terrestrial orchids, such as Cypripedium. I'll start out with a common "cyp" familiar to many of you, Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens. I know I went overboard shooting photos, but I just had to show some images, the plants have outdone themselves this year. Three unseasonably hot days pushed these along faster than I could have imagined, when they were just barely hinting as showing buds mere days ago. The bigger of my two large clumps has 32 pips this year.

Paeonies

Submitted by Hoy on Mon, 04/26/2010 - 07:42

I have several paeonies, mostly started from seed. One of the first to flower is P. mairei, obtained from Glendoick Garden, Scotland (better known for their rhodos). This spring P. mairei is unusual late.
Pictures show two different plants one more red in the leaves and the flower buds are more globular.

Thistles

There are so many species from such a lot of genera that I thought I'd start a board that was more general - Panayoti and others have been rapping on spiny plants on the Cactus discussions and I love pricklies (although Monica doesn't so I have to keep them out of touch with one another) but above all I think thistles of all sorts are the great gems. So here's a starter pack from northern Morocco. IDs are sometimes uncertain but I think they are just so good.
