This past November, NARGS received a donation from the North American Heather Society. While it was unexpected and much appreciated, its reason was rather sad: it was due to the dissolution of the society. NARGS was the lucky recipient of the balance of money they had in their bank account. The Heather Society, like many plant-based societies throughout the world, had a tough time these past few years. Original members are passing while potential younger members are more interested in growing fruits and vegetables than specialty flowering plants. COVID-19 and high inflation have been the final blows for several societies. Fortunately, NARGS has been able to weather this current storm. This article on heaths and heathers for the rock garden is both a tribute and a thank you to the North American Heather Society.
