Description and General Information:
Onosma cinerea is often known in the trade as O. taurica. Plants produce multiple, unbranched stems that reach 25-50 cm, topped by a raceme of nodding, tubular yellow flowers. The leaves are linear. The entire plant is covered in stiff hairs making them quite bristly to the touch. This species is native to rocky or sandy, open areas of SE Europe though to the Caucasus.
Blooming Season:
May to July
Cultivation:
The main criteria for Onosma is excellent winter drainage. Full sun and well-drained soil is essential. Plants are quite drought-tolerant once established. They are not fussy about the soil pH although in nature, they often grow in limestone substrates. They are often short-lived so seeds should be collected regularly. They are hardy to at least zone 5.
Propagation:
This species is primarily propagated by seed. Seeds need a stratification period of at least 3 weeks. Plants often bloom the following year.
