Geum elatum

Description and General Information:

This is a clumping plant with evergreen, pinnate leaves 10-25 cm long. The flowers stems arise 15-30 cm, topped with a loose cluster of 2-4 cm diameter yellow or red flowers. It is native to the Himalayas of Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim and Sichuan, growing in open, grassy meadows, open woodlands and sub-alpine regions at elevations 2700-4300 m. This species has been recently renamed Acomastylis elatum.

Cultivation:

This avens may be grown in full sun to light shade. The soil should be well-drained but not droughty. It is not fussy about the soil pH. It is hardy at least to zone 5.

Blooming Season:

Blooms from May in the south to August in the north.

Propagation:

By seeds or division. This species sometimes germinates without stratification but if after 10 weeks there is no germination, try stratifying seeds for 10 weeks. They should,be surface sown. Larger clumps may be dug and divided n early spring or after flowering.
