Castilleja scabrida i have found this paintbrush only seems to germinate in the presence of some sort of host(usually a penstemon of some sort). In this picture i don't know what the host might be.

Wow! Really nice!  What are its companions in the photo... looks like an aquilegia, an astragalus(?), a phlox?

An expert alpine gardener here grows Castilleja with Townsendia as a host.

Lets see... phlox bryoides, Aquilegia jonseii, Douglasia nivea, Astragalus ??and Eritricium aretiodes.

Could be pulsitilla, it grows like a weed. Just when i think i have it wiped out i find more. As for hosts here is an interesting one. I have been growing a fairly rare species called Leptodactylon glabrum (Bruneau canyon prickly phlox). It seems that wherever i have this plant growing the C. scabrida pops up next to it, i guess it has something it likes.

Fantastic stuff, Jim!  Thanks for enlivening the forum with your photos.  You certainly have some enviable weeds... Eriogonum that has to be cut back and controlled... Pulsatilla that is weeded out...   :-)
