Artemisia
schmidtiana nana
by Iza Goroff
Artemisia
schmidtiana nana is a member of the Asteraceae, but
do not expect it to produce showy daisies. Its flowers are
rare and insignificant, best removed. The species is native
to northern Japan and its island chains leading to Siberia.
It is found in rocky sites in nature.
The "nana" is sold
in most garden centers in the country as Artemisia 'Silver
Mound', a very common and inexpensive plant. This plant is
grown for its silvery, feathery foliage and its compact
form. Expect a plant grown in character to be about 8" (20
cm) tall and 14" (35 cm) wide.
Proper culture of
Artemisia schmidtiana nana
requires, full sun, very sandy, poor soil, excellent
drainage, and cutting the plant back to 1" (2.5 cm) at the
end of the growing season or before growth restarts in the
spring. Neglect of any of these requirements means the
likely death of the plant over the winter or its growth out
of character.
