Allium thunbergii

by Iza Goroff

Allium thunbergii is a most valuable plant for the sunny or partly sunny rock garden. It is one of the latest flowering plants, blooming in October and November, continuing to show color well after the first frosts. It is about 10"(25 cm) tall, easy to grow, hardy to below -32°F (-35°C), and heat resistant as well. It is native to the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, as well as South Korea. It is easily propagated by division.
