Thalictrum kiusianum

by Iza Goroff

Thalictrum kiusianum is native to Kyushu Island in southern Japan. This is a wonderful plant for the shady rock garden where it spreads slowly to form a filmy, ferny mat about 1" -2" (2 -5 cm) tall. It flowers in June and July with clusters (umbels) of tiny pink puff ball flowers, all stamens, no petals or sepals on 4" (10 cm) high thin, bare stems.

Thalictrum kiusianum is perfectly hardy ( to at least -32 degrees F, -35 C) in a well drained, sandy soil with some humus (sphagnum peat is fine) added. It grows in light to medium shade, not too dry.

A few other thalictrums are suitable for the rock garden, but this is the best.
