nanum

Eritrichum
nanum is native to both Eurasian and West North
American alpine habitats. It is a member of the borage
family, one of the few families that has species with true
blue flowers. Eritrichum nanum
IS true blue.
To grow
Eritrichum nanum successfully
is one of the holy grails of the accomplished alpine
gardener. To the author's knowledge no one has consistently
succeeded with it, even in the alpine house. It is supposed
to require acid rocks and a cool, sunny location with low
humidity. It probably wants consistant moisture, but no
water staying for long on its leaves. Strong air flow is
useful to keep the foliage dry.
Its
equally lovely relative Eritrichum
howardii with hairier leaves is from lower elevations
in the North American west, and may be somewhat easier to
grow.
There is
some controversy about the taxonomy of the Americum
Eritrichum nanum. Some
botanists call it Eritrichum
aretoides; others call it
Eritrichum nanum ssp.
aretoides; others call it
