Plant of the Month

August 1997

Allium senescens glaucum

by Iza Goroff

Allium senescens glaucum is a European plant, easily grown in a wide variety of situations, found in dry, rocky places. It is an easy plant to grow, tolerant of a range of soils and of half shade, but better grown with more sun. It is about 6" (15 cm) tall and a bit wider than tall. It is more grown for its blue/gray foliage and its unusual twisted form than its flowers. The flowers are attractive though unspectacular, forming 3/4" umbels of small lavender florets. But it blooms in August when few other rock garden plants do.

There are many species of allium suitable for the rock garden. Others will appear as Plant of the Month.
