2009 Wisconsin-Illinois Chapter 1 ID: 2137 Categories: Barb Wetzel, Ed Glover, and Nancy Nedvick packing seeds. It was Nancy's 60th birthday. We hold many of our indoor meetings at the County Extension Office which has a large meeting room complete with kitchen. This is an ideal place for the seed packaging as we can arrange large tables in a big square; that way we all sort of face each other and there is lots of conversation and banter as the day goes on. I think the first year we packaged seed we had around 25 participants; we now routinely have 12-14. We try to order the number of seeds that the group can pack in a day but there is often a little extra and some take them home to finish.(Barb is our super seed packer and she has often taken the remainder home to finish.) Over the years, different members have volunteered to be the "Seed Captain" who organizes all the materials and checks and packs the finished product to be shipped to Phase 3. Since we have done this for a number of years, we have a group that automatically knows what to do. Photo by John Mather. 2009 Wisconsin-Illinois Chapter 2 ID: 2138 Categories: Ann Munson sorts seeds with all the necessary items: seeds, lists, envelopes & glue, tools, coffee, & raffle ticket. In addition to being a "Service Event" to support NARGS, we make it a fun day and we also have 6 or 7 hours together to talk and socialize. We schedule it from 9am to 4pm but tell members they are welcome to come and leave as they need to, you can work all day or put in a few hours. The Chapter provides coffee, juice, soda and pizza for lunch and members bring coffee cake and treats. We also give out door prizes, often we have enough that everyone gets something. We ask members to bring things and this year we had several gift certificates from a local nursery, a couple books, trowels, a quart of maple syrup one of our members made, garden gloves, sometime plants and seeds. It isn't hard to come up with prizes. Photo by John Mather. Created: Thu 24 of Dec., 2009 User: Todd Boland (500x335) (139001 Bytes) [2928 Hits] |
2009 Wisconsin-Illinois Chapter 3 ID: 2136 Categories: Weighing boats from a lab are used for some seeds. We might be able to package more seed if we just doled them out and members worked at home, but doing it this way is much more fun and also working together has the advantage of being able to ask questions if their are problems and the conversation prompted by the various seeds is always educational and enjoyable.
