Dichelostemma

Submitted by Gene Mirro on Thu, 06/28/2012 - 20:14

Dichelostemma volubile is a bulb that makes a twining flower stem. It's native to California. It grew for me in a pot, but it would not bloom until I planted it in the garden. Here it is supported by a tomato cage.

Dichelostemma ida-maia is the better-known firecracker plant. It gets pollinated by hummingbirds.

Both grow for me in full sun in sandy loam soil. The soil does not get fully dry in Summer. I don't know how cold-hardy they are.

I have obtained seed grown specimens of F. davisii and F. drenovskii. Are either or both hardy enough for me to grown them in the open garden?

Narcissus 2012

I think there've been daffodil pics in the "spring bulbs" threads already but this is definitely NOT a spring bulb - Narcissus viridiflorus, the autumn flowering, green (jonquil) daffodil! It's hardy for us and grows best in an unwatered part of the rock garden.

Trillium 2012

Submitted by Mark McD on Sun, 03/18/2012 - 13:45

Surprise surprise, with exceptionally warm early spring temperatures, plants are popping open all over the place with surprising speed. Walked around the garden several times today, even looked for a sign of Trillium nivale but didn't notice anything, then on an afternoon garden walkabout, there it was, the first bloom on Trillium nivale. Many more sprouts are coming up, for more blooms on another day. Supposed to go up to 80 F (27 C) by midweek, highly unusual, hope I don't miss the flowers while I'm at work.

Colchicum 2012

Submitted by RickR on Sat, 03/17/2012 - 21:43

Does anyone have fall blooming colchicum lawns? We had a talk recently at our Chapter meeting, and the speaker showed a pic of them (in bloom, of course). She seemed to like the idea better than a spring crocus lawn. I'm not so sure. ???

I'd love to hear about the good, the bad or the ugly about them...
